Obituary for Adolph Benedict Howell III
Adolph Benedict Howell III was born January 16, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Adolph B. Howell, Jr. and Bertha Howell. He was the eldest of their five children from their union. He was involved in the Philadelphia school system before moving to Willingboro, New Jersey in his junior year of high school. Adolph graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1972.
After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Air Force where he faithfully served for over 10 years. He had multitude tours of duty during his active duty, both foreign and domestic. These included tours in Alaska, Guam and Japan. After his active duty, he continued his work in government for The General Services Administration. During his military tenure and time at The General Services Administration, Adolph received numerous accommodations and certifications until his retirement.
During his last military assignment in 1985 while working at McGuire Air Force Base, he met the love of his life, Susan DeSutter. They were united in marriage. From this union two sons were born: Adolph IV and Aaron Howell- A1C, Airman First Class.
Adolph, aka “A”, Mad-dog, and Coffee are all names used to identify him by a host of individuals. He was the very essence of honor, duty and compassion. His dedicated, outgoing and protective personality made him cherished by many and forgettable to none. Adolph was someone who valued friendship to the highest level by reminding family and friends that friendship was synonymous with kind gestures and the notion, that it is always better to give than to receive. His people skills and ability to bring individuals together has resulted in him having many rare and treasured friendships.
Adolph was well read and a student of current events, and never hesitant to share his views on any number of topics. He especially enjoyed discussions about prior wars. Adolph was a master collaborator. He had a passion for auto racing, and repairing cars as well converting that plain unattractive vehicle to a hot rod.
Adolph B Howell III entered heaven's gates on May 2 following a short illness. To his very last days, Adolph’s life was instructive. As the eldest of five, Adolph exemplified how to grow old with dignity and love. And when the Lord finally called, he showed us how to meet him with the courage of the promise that lies ahead. Adolph is survived by his wife Susan, his two sons, Adolph IV (Willingboro, New Jersey) and Aaron- A1C, Airman First Class (Dover, Delaware), two brothers, Andre Howell (New London, Connecticut), Adrian Howell (Willingboro, New Jersey), two sisters, Bernadette Shipman (Woodstock, Georgia), Brenda Engram (Willingboro, New Jersey) and two Brother in-laws, Christopher Engram (Willingboro, New Jersey), Xavier (Pete) Shipman (Woodstock, Georgia), twelve nieces and nephews, ten grand nieces and nephews, loving aunts and uncles, countless treasured cousins and his lifelong cherished friendships: Abe Purrington, Douglas “Poncho” Wortham, Eric Churn, Frank Womack, Mark Peters, Mike Towles and Vince Williams.
We are sincerely grateful to our entire family and friends for their incredible show of love and support during this difficult time. In addition to dealing with this great loss, our ability to celebrate the life of Adolph Howell is compromised by the current pandemic and its subsequent restrictions.
