Obituary for Athanasios Karapanagiotis

Athanasios Karapanagiotis, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, June 16th 2021 in the comfort of his own home, with his beloved family members gathered at his side.

Athanasios—or “Tommy” as he was known by friends and family in the United States— was born in Aitoliko, Greece to the late Zafiria and Theologos Karapanagiotis. After moving to the United States, he spent much of his life in South Florida, before moving to his current residence of Southampton, New Jersey. Athanasios was a deeply curious person, as well as an immensely skillful craftsman. This combination meant that there was absolutely nothing that he could not find a way to build or fix— ranging from on-demand furniture requested by his family, to ornamental lighthouses and birdhouses, and even including an “at home” pulley system to hoist furniture up multiple flights of stairs. Over the course of his life, he also designed and built several homes from the ground up, entirely on his own.

In his free time, Athanasios enjoyed cooking, playing cards, building in his garage, dancing, bowling, and playing golf. He also enjoyed reminiscing about Greece: thinking and talking about his family there, as well as discussing Greek food, Greek culture, and life in the village. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his immediate family: sharing food, drinks, laughter, conversation, and debate with his wife Maria, his daughter Nicole, and his son-in-law, Shantanu.

Athanasios is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Maria Karapanagiotis; daughter, Dr. Nicole Karapanagiotis; and son-
in-law, Dr. Shantanu Bagchi. He is also survived by his three cherished siblings: Aikaterinh Kaliakatsoy, Gerasimos Karapanagiotis, and Efstratios Karapanagiotis.

Family and friends are invited to his Memorial Service on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at 12:00PM. It will be held at Mount Laurel Home for Funerals, 212 Ark Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054. Athanasios wanted his memorial to be a celebration of his life: as such, visitors are requested not to wear black. Masks are required to be worn. Digital attendance accommodations (via Zoom) will be made for family members attending from outside of the United States.
