Obituary for Francis J. Thiel "Frank"

Francis J. Thiel “Frank”, age 59, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Frank was born on April 10, 1964, in Mount Holly, NJ, to the late Carolyn and Francis Thiel. He was raised in Mount Laurel and attended Lenape High School. Frank received his bachelor’s degree from University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio and later earned his law degree from Cooley Law School, Lansing, Michigan. Frank was an experienced Attorney who spent the past 19 years of his legal career with the Office of the Public Defender in Camden, NJ. He was an avid sports fan all of his life. Whether playing or watching, he enjoyed baseball and basketball, including local Philly Sports, College and Professional basketball, his favorite teams-UNC and the University of Miami, and refereeing basketball at all levels, elementary school through Division III College. Frank was a respected member of the NCAA Division III National Junior College Athletic Association, the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO), the Pennsylvania PIAA District XII, and an NJSIAA State Playoff Official. In recent years he added Instructor to his list of credentials as an IAABO Board 34 Cadet Instructor. Frank was known to be the “best partner” when it came to refereeing. He was always kind and caring, a loving husband, father and pet owner and an all-around true gentleman. He enjoyed spending his free time with his family and friends, going to concerts, playing guitar, cooking, reading and watching tv.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Catherine (nee Larranaga); his children, Michael and Jennifer Thiel; his siblings, Edward Thiel (Lorrie), Maria Williams (Walt) and Steven Thiel (Heather); his mother-in-law, Alice Larranaga and father-in-law John G. Larranaga (Jeanne); nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. 

Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 6PM – 8PM at the Mount Laurel Home for Funerals, 212 Ark Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at 11AM at Church of Saint Joan of Arc, 100 Willow Bend Road, Marlton, NJ 08053. Interment private at the request of the family.
