Obituary for Fred C. Shotwell Jr.

Fred C. Shotwell, Jr., 87, of Mount Laurel, NJ, passed away on June 1, 2023, with his loving family at his side.

Born in Franklin, New Jersey, Fred was a former resident of Easton, Pennsylvania, Willow Grove, PA, the Jersey Shore and the Princeton, NJ area. He was a former First Lieutenant in the United States Army. A proud graduate of the Lafayette College class of 1957, Fred earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Fred was President of the Mu Upsilon Sigma Fraternity and Vice President of the Lafayette Chapter of the Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi. Fred later continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania studying the Philosophy of Science. Fred had a distinguished career beginning with General Electric where he worked on missile guidance systems, and as a business executive in the marketing research field. He retired in 1993 as President of American Family Publishers.

Fred's interests were vast and wide. His love of baseball and his abilities as a pitcher presented him with an offer to try out for the Saint Louis Cardinals organization. He was a loyal fan of the Philadelphia Phillies dating back to the days in Connie Mack Stadium. He had a love for music and played classical clarinet and jazz saxophone, often hosting jam sessions in his home; he enjoyed attending many seasons of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Fred was an avid reader with a love of books on history, science, and music. He enjoyed motorcycles, trains, and model railroading. In later retirement years, he loved spending time in the yard pruning and trimming the many varieties of plants and trees. As a youth, Fred was often seen with his boy-hood dog Elmer; he shared his love of dogs with his children, raising several Weimaraners in the family home.
