Mr. Marcus, 88, a resident of the Shalom House in Ventnor, New Jersey, passed away on December 25, 2020 at 4:31 AM. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to the late Edward and Flora (Haase) Marcus on February 11, 1932. The family moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he received his early education in the public schools of that city. He attended Yale University where he received a Bachelor’s degree from its College and his law degree from its Law school. He practiced law in Hartford for 44 years, specializing in trials and appeals. Upon retirement in 2001 he moved to the Philadelphia Main Line Area where he resided for two years before moving to Atlantic County, New Jersey, first to Smithville in Galloway Township and then to Ventnor City. He leaves a daughter, Molly (Scott Chernin), two sons, Daniel (Suzanne) and Jonathan Marcus, two stepsons, Andrew and Michael Spielman, seven grandchildren, and several other beloved family members. During his career in Connecticut, he served in a number of professional, elected and appointive positions, including several terms as a Justice of Peace, and a number of civic positions, including the Presidency of the Hartford Zionist District during the Six Day War involving Israel in 1967 and served as Vice President and Counsel of the Hartford Chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. Since moving to this area he has maintained memberships in the Democratic clubs in Galloway and Ventnor, serving as president of the latter, and since soon after coming to this area he has been an elected member of the Atlantic County Democratic Committee, was the Democratic Municipal Chair of Ventnor City and served on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board of Atlantic County. He was a member of Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor and regularly worshipped at the Chabad Ventnor Shul. Funeral and interment will be private at the discretion of the family.
