Obituary for Joseph James Rooney
Joseph J. Rooney, age 88, of Mount Laurel, formerly of Union, NJ passed away on February 21, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born on July 24, 1935 to the late Sarah and James Rooney in Queens, New York. Joe grew up in Sandymount, Dublin, Ireland where he lived with his aunts, the Broughals.
When he returned to the United States, Joe worked as a printer for many years, and then as a graphics art teacher in the Linden School District.
He resided part-time in Andover, NJ and was a member of the Good Shepherd Church where he was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus.
After his retirement, Joe lived in Ocala, Florida for over ten years and spent time with beloved friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Singles Club and Nickel Nickel Club at the On Top of the World Retirement Community. Joe was a self-taught pianist and a prolific painter. He loved both traveling the world and staying home with a good cup of tea and a John Wayne movie.
Joe is predeceased by his loving wife, Arlene (née Dacey) and 5 siblings. He is survived by his children, Sioban Opperman (Tom), Connell Rooney (Isabel Goncalves-Rooney) and Breda Ward (Terry); brother, Fred Rooney; grandchildren, Joe, Katie, Darcy, Kerry and Johnny.
