Obituary for Margaret Cecilia "Peggy" Markiewicz (Conway)

Margaret C. Markiewicz (nee Conway) of Willingboro, age 97 years young, went to be with Our Lord on August 5, 2021, while staying at her daughter’s home in Hainesport, NJ. Beloved wife of the late Joseph P. Markiewicz. Devoted mother of Patricia Ann (Nelson), Denise Marie (Willie), Joseph P., Jr. (Rosemary), and James Thomas. Loving grandmother of Dawn (Steven), Kimberly (Robbie), Steven (Jennifer), Timothy (Kelly), Katelyn (Brandon), Kris, Joseph III (Brittany), Christopher (Nicole), and Jenna. Proud great-grandmother of Michael, Matthew, Kyle, Alexis, Kassandra, Samuel, Izaac, Elaina, Abigail, Maya, Lucas, Eva Bella, Madelyn and Joseph IV. Dear sister of Elizabeth Rauh and the late Annamarie Meagher. She was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews that she cared about deeply.

Margaret was known to her friends and family as “Peggy” and was the first child of Joseph Conway and Margaret Reynolds. She was born on January 24, 1924 at Methodist hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Peggy enjoyed a very happy childhood with her two sisters growing up in South Philadelphia. The whole family loved music, and all sang or played an instrument. Peggy played both the organ and the piano. She was overjoyed to receive a baby grand piano from her parents for her sixteenth birthday.

She was very proud to attend the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School which was the first all-girls Catholic high school in America. While only a teenager in high school, she was honored to be selected to perform for the public on the world-famous pipe organ at Wanamaker’s Department Store in center city Philadelphia.

After the War, she met Joseph who became the love of her life. They were married for almost 60 years. They loved to travel, spend time at the shore with family, go to the casino and win at bingo! In 1958 they were one of the first five families to move into the new development then known as Levittown now named Willingboro. They were always together until Joseph’s passing in 2003.

Peggy went to work for the federal government shortly after high school where she held numerous assignments over the years. Most recently Margaret worked as a personnel administrator at the military base headquarters at Fort Dix, NJ where she retired after 30+ years of faithful service. During her tenure with the federal government, Margaret received numerous awards, including a special award that recognized her many lifetime achievements. Following her retirement, she went to work as office manager for her daughter Denise and son-in-law Bill. There she kept everything organized and operating smoothly for many years.

Margaret was a unique woman, well ahead of her time combining work with raising her growing family. She always exemplified the highest personal standards. She set a good example for us to follow and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Most often called “Grandmom GG” she was happiest when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around her. She was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed.
