Obituary for John T. and Mary-Elizabeth Kish

John Thomas Kish Jr. and Mary-Elizabeth (Shurts) Kish were married for 62.5 years and died peacefully within one day of each other.



John was born in Norwalk Conn on December 30, 1936, to Antoinette Dominic (Socha) and John Thomas Kish.  John grew up in the New London/Norwich area, graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 1955 and marrying Mary-Elizabeth Shurts in October of 1960. John began working in the chemistry laboratory at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital after high school and retired in 2000.  In addition to his work in the chemistry laboratory, John was also president of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Employee Federal Credit Union for 35 years. John was active in the Niantic/East Lyme community, establishing the East Lyme Judo Club, coaching baseball and soccer, and serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the town of East Lyme. John enjoyed spending time with family and golfing as often as possible.



Mary-Elizabeth was born February 14, 1938 in New London Connecticut to Mary-Jane (Barton) Shurts and Arthur Vanderveer Shurts.  Mary was a graduate of New London City schools and Elmira College. Mary began her career at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in the Chemistry Laboratory where she met her husband. Mary also assisted her late father with his appraisal and insurance business before joining forces with her late sister and brother-in-law, Susan and William Ebersole, at their accounting firm. Mary was an enthusiastic gardener and avid reader of mystery novels.



John and Mary loved traveling, camping in Vermont, and hosting all of their grandchildren at their Niantic home for summer vacations.



Mary and John are survived by their children: son Peter (Carol) of Bethlehem PA, daughter Susan (Glenn) of Cinnaminson NJ, and daughter Caroline (Chris) of Pasadena Md, grandchildren: Emily (Erich), Peter (Mercedes), Tim (Tina), Caroline (Mike), Amanda (Ingvar), Hannah as well as great-grandchild Aislin.
