Richard A. Ferguson (Rich) was born in Kingston, Jamaica to Leslie Ferguson and Rhoda McKoy on November 22, 1962. In 1980, at the age of 18, Rich migrated to the United States with his mom and sister. Though Rich held various jobs throughout his lifetime, he was most proud of his service in the US Army and National Guard. There he attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded several service medals including the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Rich was a lifelong learner. After completing his service and while working at NJ Transit, Rich went back to school to earn a Bachelors Degree in Human Resources Management and then a Master of Business Administration Degree. Though he loved learning, he loved teaching and mentoring even more. As such, he worked part-time at the Bergen Community College teaching Earth Science and Accounting. In addition, he gave back to the community by volunteering as a tutor and mentoring to young people.

Rich lived with no regrets, and never let anything deter him from achieving his goals. His motto was “you only live once, so you might as well get what you want.” He had a passion for all kind of toys, such as cars, motorcycles, bicycles, drones, any sort of electronics, and the like. He also enjoyed running and staying fit. In fact, Rich prided himself on his running speeds and his amazing blood pressure numbers which he would monitor daily and send to his close friends to encourage them to do the same. Rich touched many people in his lifetime. His family is extremely thankful for the outpouring of support from close friends who have become like family.

Rich is survived by his daughters Ameesha and Shari and siblings Ann Marie Briggs (Raymond), Douglas, Patsy, Anthony (Millicent), Donald, Orville, Marcia (Wesley), Frank (Faydeen), Steve (Kelley), Paulette (Tez), Robert, Uncle Barrington, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Rich was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Ferguson, his mother Rhoda McKoy, and his sister Kharol.

The family of Richard Ferguson wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the NJ Transit family who has consistently showed up throughout this journey.

Finally, the family asks that, to honor Rich, you write and ask your Congressman to fight for more funding and federal investments in lifesaving cancer research to improve patient outcome and to one day find a cure for this deadly scourge.
