Robert Edwin Maurer: A Lasting Legacy

Robert Maurer, of Cherry Hill, NJ, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the age of 77.

Robert is predeceased by his brother, Joseph Maurer. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 38 years, Mary Maurer; daughters, Jenna Struzik (Brian) and Carly Maurer Kaufmann (Alan); grandchildren, Parker and Reeve Struzik, and Felix, Tabby, and Trixie Kaufmann, many loving nieces and nephews, and his cherished, 16 year-old, diabetic cat: Luc.

Robert was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Pierce and Irene Maurer. He resided in Belle Mead, NJ for 20 years before moving to his current residence in Cherry Hill with Mary. Robert was a brilliant and well-respected Engineering Fellow who enjoyed 45 successful and productive years in industrial R&D. He worked for Johnson & Johnson for many years (Ethicon) until he retired in 2013.

Robert’s expertise in material science and metallurgy resulted in significant advancements in medical technology, including the world’s premier cardiovascular suture needles, which continue to save lives every day. As a beloved mentor, Robert had a unique ability to foster talent and inspire collaboration among diverse teams. His distinguished career is marked by a legacy of pioneering achievements, from his work on novel materials and surface modifications for NASA's Space Shuttle through the design and development of commercially successful surgical needles, manufacturing processes, and performance enhancements, as well as numerous patents and publications that have made an indelible impact.

Robert was a Freemason and he had many diverse interests, including knife-collecting and the study of philosophical and theological scholars. He was a talented guitar player as well, with a deep appreciation for music. But all who knew Robert would be quick to point out that he had a very playful and funny side, too, and he loved a good laugh better than anything.
Robert was also known for his big heart and extraordinary generosity. Whenever someone needed help, Robert/Dad/Uncle Robert/Bob/Uncle Bobby was there. His devotion to his family and extended family ran deep, as did his friendships. An ardent animal lover, Robert made sure his beloved cat (Luc) would be well-cared for by his daughter Jenna after he was gone. He was an amazing man and will be sorely missed by all, but never forgotten.

Services will be private for the time-being.
