Arthur R. (Art) Mahnken, Sr., of Mt. Laurel, NJ, passed away on November 3, 2018 at the Samaritan Center at Voorhees, NJ. He was 91.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1927, he lived in South Ozone Park, Queens, NY, until he graduated high school in 1945. He was a Naval Veteran of WWII. He enlisted at the age of 17, which required his father’s written permission. One day after starting boot camp, the Japanese surrendered. Art liked to say, “they saw me coming!” He continued to serve in the Navy for a year, stationed in Brooklyn and then Quonset Point, RI serving as an air traffic controller at the Naval Air Station.

Art earned a BS in Chemical Engineering on the GI Bill from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, NY in 1951, where he also played on the varsity basketball team.

Art and Joan, his wife of 52 years, settled in East Brunswick, NJ where they resided for over 30 years and raised their family. He retired from American Cyanamid Company in 1985 and he and Joan then moved to Mt. Laurel, NJ. Art played trumpet and performed with many bands with his brothers growing up. He was an excellent bridge player, enjoyed golfing with his Old Duffer’s Group (he had two holes-in-one), loved fishing and boating, loved playing the slots in Atlantic City, and traveled the world on many cruises with Joan throughout his more than 30 years of retirement. His greatest joy came from spending time with family, especially his six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Joan, and his three brothers. He is survived by his son, Arthur, Jr. (Terri) of Stockton, CA, daughters Susan McLellan (Scott) of Kempton, PA and Lisa Israel (Chip) of Huntington Beach, CA, as well as 6 grandchildren, Dana Sosa (Kevin), Hayley Mahnken, Zachary McLellan (Lysa), Andrew McLellan, Katelyn Israel, and Karyn Israel.

Art was a lifelong Lutheran and member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 910 Marne Highway, Hainesport, NJ 08036-2666. A memorial service will be held at Saint Paul’s on Thursday, November 8, at 11:00 AM, followed by interment in the Saint Paul’s Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Art’s memory to Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address, or to Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053-3101. Arrangements by the Mount Laurel Home for Funerals.
