Obituary

Barbara Lee Cowan (nee Hyman), age 82, of Forked River, NJ passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, August 29, 2019.

Barbara was born and raised in The Bronx, NY before moving to Bergen County as a teenager to attend Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack. While she left the city at a young age, she never lost her classic New York accent, and no one could order a cup of “Black Caw-fee” better than she could. In 1955, she graduated from Donovan Business College and began a life-long career as a legal secretary at various firms throughout Bergen County. Her laser focus, tenacity, and attention to detail enabled her to flourish in a career for which she was perfectly suited.

Barbara and her husband, Ken, settled in the Township of Washington where they lived for 32 years and raised their two children, Lori and KC. An avid supporter of her children’s academic, athletic, and musical activities, Barbara was a well known member of the community who would enthusiastically cheer on her children from the audience or the sidelines. Her door was always open, and kids throughout the neighborhood and The Township knew that they were always welcome to stop by and hang out at “The Cowans.”

As an “empty-nester,”she enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and cherished annual trips to Long Beach Island with her extended family. She loved to play any game as long as it was at a table of her friends or family, performed yearly in musical theater at her retirement community, and spent her free time antiquing, knitting, and caring for her beloved Shih Tzus.

Sadly, Barbara’s son, Kenneth, Jr., pre-deceased her. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth; her daughter, Lori Beth Canfield; her grandson, James Canfield; and many beloved nieces, nephews, godchildren, and cousins.

A visitation for friends and family will be held on Wednesday, September 4th, from 8:30 to 9:30 AM at the Mount Laurel Home for Funerals, 212 Ark Road, Mount Laurel, NJ. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following the visitation at 10:00 AM at Saint John Neumann RC Church, 560 Walton Avenue, Mount Laurel, NJ. Barbara will be laid to rest alongside her beloved son on Thursday, September 5th at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 85 Pleasant Hill Road, Chester, NJ.
