Obituary for Frederick "Fritz" Fahrendorf

Frederick (Fritz) Fahrendorf (92) Hainesport, NJ — Frederick (Fritz) Fahrendorf passed away 5/19/2015 peacefully into the hands of the beloved Lord. Fritz was a devout Catholic and the beloved husband of Isabelle (Poirier) Fahrendorf. Fritz leaves four children; Mary Gail Deaux and her husband Thomas of Mount Laurel, NJ; JoAnne Soltes and her husband Robert of Milford, CT; Rose Marie Guglielmo and her husband Anthony of Trumbull, CT; Albert Dion and his wife Carol of Whitinsville, MA. He had 11 grandchildren and 18 Great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Fritz also leaves a brother Peter Fahrendorf of West Bend, WI. He was predeceased by Isabelle (Poirier Dion) Fahrendorf originally of Richmond, Quebec, who was his wife of 53 years. A sister Mary McCarthy and a sister Pat Keating also predeceased him. Born in St. Louis, MO May 2, 1923 the oldest son of Peter M. Fahrendorf and Beulah (Reppenhagen) Fahrendorf he was raised in Scarsdale, NY and attended Immaculate Heart of Mary grammar school and Scarsdale High School. He graduated from Notre Dame University, Class of ’44 with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering. While there he participated in the government’s V-12 Program through which he was commissioned an Ensign and assigned to the Commandant, Third Naval District at 90 Church St, NYC. With the war ending he found employment first at Republic Aviation and then American Airlines where he supervised conversion of military aircraft to civilian use. He studied the science of metallurgy through night courses at the University of Bridgeport (CT) and was then employed by Handy & Harman Precious metals, Inc. where he remained for several years initially as a laboratory analyst and later worked in the development of custom industrial alloys. In 1966 he joined the Spiral Metals Div. of Peerless Rolled Leaf Co. in Perth Amboy, NJ as VP Specialty Products with responsibility for quality control in the production of rolled calcium foil. He moved to Franklin Lakes, NJ and founded PMF Alloys in 1976 where he designed and developed his own proprietary equipment for continuous extrusion of metallic calcium foil as thin as .005 inch. He was the sole supplier of this material to NASA for the Apollo space program. He was very active in his Church, Most Blessed Sacrament, serving on church and school committees. Fritz was also a long time member of the Most Blessed Sacrament choir. He loved puttering in his workshop. His hobby was creating St. Anthony and Blessed Mother Shrines for everyone he knew. They lived most of their lives in Franklin Lakes living across from the church and enjoying great neighbors before moving in their later years to Hainesport, NJ to be close to his daughter and grandkids. Visiting hours for Fritz will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Funeral Home http://www.vpmemorial.com/, 530 High Mountain Road Franklin Lakes, NJ from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. His funeral will be at the Most Blessed Sacrament Church 787 Franklin Lakes Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Christ the King Cemetery.
